The accessories for network test equipment like the Fluke DTX 1800 include DTX fibre modules for fibre certification and the fault finding of fiber networks. The DTX 1800 is essentially a Fluke Cable Analyser for testing copper networks, but the availability of fibre test modules expands the flexibility of the Fluke DTX to include fibre test of multimode and singlemode fibre networks. OTDR

For fibre network fault finding an OTDR is invaluable. OTDR stands for Optical Time Domain Reflectometer and their use has revolutionised fibre loss measurement and fault finding including determining accurate 'distance to fault'. OTDR's work by injecting a series of optical pulses into the fibre under test. The OTDR then extracts from the same end of the fibre light which is reflected back from various points of the fibre where the refractive index changes due to poor splice or fault condition.
